Discussion: National Team Management

It’d be a crime if I didn’t use that image – its so overused.

Now back to the content for today and I’m looking at a quite widely discussed issue (well, I’ve seen an article on it, snippets in others etc.) – features of a national team manager. There is a severe lack of things to do really if you choose to become manager of the National Team in FM 2007. Let’s hope this ‘discussion’ goes better than the last one you bloody miserable lot..

My View

We are all in agreement most probably that by FM 2008 we want to see National Team Management improved drastically as in it’s state now it is really only best to use it as a side job to your main one of managing your club of choice. In Football Manager to manage your country is viewed as your bit on the side so to speak and not a full time job as it is in real life. Most national team managers in the game nowadays will manage a club team as well – I believe the lack of people who solely manage a country for a while is due to the fact they get bored. There are currently few features as a national team manager to make those months of wait for a game seem worthwhile and little help on the scene in the form of guides lets say for an aspiring Mike Basset. So, what do SI and the scene do? Well, here are a few features in my view that could make international management all that bit better:

More Media Input /
Where’s the sense of excitement that surrounds a coming World Cup in this game? Where’s the rumours and major public interest of the new management of a national team that happens in most countries. Now by more media input I don’t mean “let’s turn FM into Footballers Wives” – however much fun that would be – I mean the real big main features of club managing that lack when you take the helm of a country. Manager Interaction for one – do national managers not have the right to criticise others? I think they do. This feature is desperately needed in the game to create a mind game effect and would give the opportunity for the management of a country to become more equal to team management.
Then theirs player interaction. The only time you really get to interact with your players in national team mode is when you occasionally (and I mean that) get rejected for a call up or don’t pick a star player – and they moan. With FM 2007 building a more complex interaction with everyone for managers at club level surely they should include this for when you manage a country also by the next instalment of the game. There are more aspects that could do with much higher media coverage but I won’t go on, you can suggest.

More Staff Involvement /
This applies generally to Football Manager as a game but in NTM (it’s plain what that stands for) staff involvement is, well, near enough nothing. Hiring staff is generally pointless and you could easily get on without them. The only major decisions on this front are the choice of who to manage your youngster team, and you take no part in controlling coaching sessions. They are basically there in name and nothing more – and scouts (see point below) should defiantly be including in the list for members of staff. All in all this a poor feature with general room for improvement.

Better Scouting Network and Training Options /

Do real managers of national teams in the world not scout for the next superstar? Do they rely on a list (‘national team pool’) and the rare media snippet saying this player has great form to choose there players. Well, I’m sure the more incompetent ones do (I’m looking at you Sven) but really you have to realise that national teams have scouts too and they use them to uncovering talent and observe players for possible picking for there next squad. It gives you something to do to fill up those lonely months without much more action that come with managing a national team. I currently manage England and Man Utd (I know – all that glory. I win though, so bah to you!) And really I don’t have the time or the facilities to search for new stars, so I end up using the same old boring squad. But being a focused national team manager and with a good scouting network you could do that, and get great results by having a England squad full of budding talent, waiting to be testing on the international stage and ready to kick out those old timers.
As for training, well, the dust has settled on that part of my FM – I never enter. But for the few weeks NTM get the players a year they could use there own rigorous training system on them to help them prepare for upcoming games/cups. It’s all to add to the realism of it.

Your Views

And I actually want to hear from you this time. Do you agree, or disagree with the features I think should be added into the game to fulfil the National Team experience? Are the any more you’d like to add? Do you actually think its fine as it is? Please do voice your opinion; it’s a discussion and all. If you don’t want to comment email me (although it’s quite a strange thing that you don’t). Have fun…

I agree with the ‘boring’ aspect of international management. Sometimes I fancy just seeing how I can do with England and no other team, yet I find myself simply going on holiday until two weeks before each match – which takes away all the fun, news, etc.

I think something that would be a good addition would be recommended international players by current managers:

You could receive a message as follows:-

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has today suggested that young English attacking midfielder Theo Walcott would be a great addition to the England squad.

Walcott, 17, has been in great form this season scoring 8 goals in 23 appearances.

You could then respond with a choice from, for example:

    1) Walcott is a great player and will be in the next squad
    2) Walcott is too young for the squad at the moment|
    3) Walcott is not good enough for my squad
    4) Walcott might be in the squad if he keeps this form up
    5) We have better players in this position than him at the moment

Should you say Walcott would be in the next squad, then he would expect to be called up. Managers at club level tend to fall out or be great “friends” with others in my experience – something hardly done at international level on FM so far. (Beckham and Sven in real life, for example – wouldn’t it be great if FM formed these sort of player/manager relationships? Perhaps you could even pick your favourite players from the squad or rather the media suggest which ones are because of your patience with them, etc, etc)

International managership definitely needs an overhaul in FM08. Ideally I’d like the ability to have a network of scouts (Tord Grip style) who I can send out to view players and to comment on managers/players and their relationship with me.

international managment is a real real drag on fm 2007, most of the time i dont really bother as it bores me waiting for 10 minutes till i get to the next match and then leading up to it there is hardly any media hype or anything!! they really should spice it up a bit. Heres a suggestion, as they have done in total club manager they could introduce a newspaper that comes up at the end of each week, it would have different sections such as a player transfer section and also various match reports written as if u were reading it from a newspaper!!! it was fantastic in total manager!! it would definatly spice the game up alot!!

I would just like to see more basic features aswell. For example:

When being appointed a National Team Manager, actually declaring to the public/media who you choose to be National Capt. You could change evry game and nothing is made of it.

Also, would it be that hard to give numbers to the squad before a big tournament? In 1 game Michael Owen for example could be number 9, the next 10, etc. We all no a Gerrard is a 4 and a Rooney a 9. A Thierry Henry a 12. Let us number our squads, makes it just a little more realistic.

The one thing that would make this game special for me, is if at half time in the most important game of the season you are 3-0 down, a new option appears in the team talk menu

    “spirit of istanbul”

    it would just be beautiful

I want 3D match view. Fifa style.

  9. improve national teams on

you need to improve national teams i mean how can hungary and teams like malta moldova beat bosnia or greece or what ever the game has to be more realistic, ok im not saying the teams that are shitter have to lose every time im just saying that it should be easier for better teams to beat them

i fill we should have england 16s and 17s which will make the international management much better, and we should be able to change the kits ourself every 2 seasons instead of doing it on editor.

  11. sully on

i also think the assistant coach should get involed more example. when u have to decided the england squad the assistant manager could give you a team sheet of what he thinks you should pick and maybe way

have better regens comming through for decent nations. i came third in the world cup with australia, but i now have no kalac, schwazer or bolton for goals. im using a player which has a highest stat of 15 and his avg is a 10. i now have no decent keepers and after the players like kewell, cahill, neill and culina retire there is no decent players comming through either. teams like england etc always remain high because the regens for that country have atleast 30 decent ones. your results in major comps should impact hows the sport thrives in your country. performaing well in a world cup such as third for australia should boost the number of decent players. its like when senegal, south africa, cameroon, nigeria and ivory coast, south korea and japan made world cups, there top players were signed by high profile clubs and the sport thrived and decent youth came through. now that there falling off, the potential comming through is dropping off. by having this fluctuation, going well with a team means you can still go well when key players retire in a team such as australia. the youth comming through in the a-league is better than what most of australia has produced over the last 5 years before the 06 world cup. this will make internationals more intresting and make squad selection better.

In addition FM08 need to buy (? – I guess this is the issue) licenses to include the German squad. An international turnament isn’t the same without Germany.

I always wanted to be my National U21 team Manager,it will be cool if FM2008 adds that option, but i don’t think thats gonna hapen soon.

  15. Lew on

Yeh, cool idea, would be great if we could manage an England under 21 or 19s team.

Also, off this topic but in relevance to another, maybe on the topic of link-ups, you were able to send a saved game from one computer to another. This would be great for me as I could send my best and longest season to my fast laptop from my extremely slow computer which takes ages to load and then ages when the game has loaded.

Hi I just want to say that FM is the best game in the world. I buy it every year the minute it comes out. I agree that FM2008 should have a manager of a club recommending a player to an international manager. I also think it would make the game more interesting if there was way more media hype before a really important international game or tournament. I think it would also be a great benefit if you could tell a player that he is going to be dropped and replaced by another player if he doesnt start playing well for example you could tell wayne rooney that if he doesnt start playing well he will be replaced by peter crouch

  17. Joe on

I agree totally that International management is boring, there should be more player/press interaction and relationship building with manager and players, the choice of captain to be announced on appointment is a great idea, oh and why when i was england manager on 3 occaisions did our Wayne Rooney get a 2 game ban that lasted for over 50 internationals?
Another improvement would be a big naff off flashing, bells and whistles picture of the cup you have just one flashing on the screen with champers too

  18. Japanese fan on

what about the japanese squad??? there would be a start, yes? o and the german squad too.

  19. James on

I occasionally found myself border and being forced to go on a holiday for months after playing the game till 2011.
I think it would be nice to be able to spend the money earned from the coaching job at clubs perhaps on buy houses, cars or even in buying out other clubs no matter how under-classed they are.
I also sometime would like to be the assistant manager of a national team rather than the manager.

  20. Adam Fillingham on

I haven’t yet bought a football manager game and i was wondering what some of the the good points of being a intonational manager is.

  21. Huntwa on
